What are the 5Rhythms and Open Floor Practices?

The basic principal of all Embodied Movement is that all we have experienced and will experience in this lifetime happens in the body. The body is our vehicle for experiencing this world and therefore it is through this vehicle, we can become more self-aware, more present, more alive. Through embodied movement, we can discover new parts of ourselves. We can transform our past, present and future relationships to our body, heart, mind, and spirit. We can discover and deepen our relationship to ourselves, each other, our communities and the world.

5Rhythms and Open Floor are Embodied Movement practices that use movement, dance and the creative arts to discover or rediscover, remember and reawaken what it is to be fully human – physically, emotionally, mentally, relationally and spiritually. They each have their own unique and beautiful structures for dropping into movement as a practice.

The 5Rhythms: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness are pathways into maps of exploration. We explore how each of these rhythms show up in our life or not. We explore how we relate to them as they move through our physical, emotional, mental, soulful and spiritual parts of ourselves. We explore how these rhythms effect us in our relationships and therefore our way of moving through the world.

Open Floor works with the 4×4, the 4 Dimensions of Embodiment – Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual and how they are weaved with our 4 Hungers for Solitude, Connection, Belonging and Spirit. We explore these states of embodiment through 10 Core Movement Resources that support us in living a more fulfilling embodied life.

At gatherings, classes and workshops, we ask that movers enter the dance floor with a sense of intention. Specific intentions may be to experience the teachings offered, they may include working out personal issues, exploring expressing authentically and creatively or entering a state of meditation. And they may all happen in the same event.

No experience or physical ability required. No one is too anything to not be able to explore and expand their capacity for living a fully embodied life.
